Otoplasty is the medical term for plastic surgery to correct prominent ears. This procedure aims to address overly prominent ears, which can cause both aesthetic and psychological discomfort due to unpleasant remarks, often affecting children and adults alike.
THREE CHARACTERISTICS OF PROMINENT EARS
Otoplasty corrects three primary issues related to prominent ears:
- An overly open angle
- Lack of internal curves
- Excessive size of the auricular concha
In most cases, all these features are present, requiring a complete procedure. However, in some cases, partial corrections are needed, which demand a less extensive surgery.
HOW IS OTOPLASTY PERFORMED?
Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as six years old, as well as adults. For children, the procedure is done under general anesthesia, while teenagers and adults typically undergo it with local anesthesia and sedation.
The entire surgery is performed from the back of the ear to conceal the scar, ensuring it remains hidden.
RESULTS OF EAR CORRECTION SURGERY
This surgery significantly improves the position of prominent ears, naturally bringing the auricular cartilage closer to the head. Modern techniques avoid unnatural results, such as ears that are too close to the head or appear folded backward, which can signal the surgery was performed.
It’s important to note that pre-existing asymmetries may persist, even though the surgeon aims to achieve as much symmetry as possible. These minor differences are usually nearly imperceptible.
The initial bandage can be quite large, often wrapping the head entirely like a helmet. This dressing is maintained for a few days and replaced regularly. Afterward, it is substituted with a smaller bandage, typically gauze covered by a tennis-style headband.
Stitches are generally removed after 10 days. For children, Dr. Alexandre often uses dissolvable stitches to avoid the fear children might associate with their removal.
