Blepharoplasty Plastic Surgery (eyelid or double eyelid surgery)

Blepharoplasty is the most common type of plastic surgery and results in a great visual impact and short recovery time. It can be done together with the face lift and is indicated for those that look into the mirror and see a tired look or face!

Most of our patients refer to feeling heavy eyes, with the loss of the ocular contour and a tired look. In women, it’s common to have difficulties to put makeup on, since the flaccid skin makes it impossible to bring out the eyes.

Besides the aesthetic problems that can make the face look aged or even asymmetrical, flaccidity below the eyelids may reduce one’s peripheral vision and hinder the fields of vision of one or both eyes. Patients also frequently refer that their eyes feel heavy.

In some cases, the sagging eyelids may not allow the eyes to open completely and the removal of excess tissue may improve your vision. In other words, it can be performed to improve your field of vision.

EyelidTo whom is Blepharoplasty indicated?

Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic procedure usually indicated after 40 years of age, due to the appearance of aging signs as a consequence of reduced skin elasticity below the eyelids.

Thus, this surgery may be indicated for:

  1. Excess skin in the upper eyelids;
  2. Excess skin in the lower eyelids;
  3. Apparent eye bags in the upper and lower eyelids;
  4. Sagging or poorly positioned eyelids due to flaccidity and skin excess (make the differential or additional eyelid-ptosis diagnosis)

How is Blepharoplasty done?

This surgery aims at restoring the normal condition of the eyelids in relation to the amount of excess skin, apparent fat bags and harmonic positioning of the eyelid contour.

Anesthesia

All our patients receive pre-anesthesia medication that already induces sleep. Then, a light sedation is administered so that you sleep throughout the entire procedure. You will be discharged from the hospital on the same day, so you won’t have to spend the night at the hospital.

Different techniques – Blepharoplasty

There’s a technique to treat the skin, another one to treat the bag, another to treat the skin and the bag, and another to treat the muscle, like when the muscle is different on one side in comparison to the other.

In lower Blepharoplasty, the incision in the lower eyelids may be external, through the skin and just below the eyelashes. In the lower eyelids, on the other hand, the incision can be internal, inside the lower eyelid through the connective tissue. This is the transconjunctival Blepharoplasty.

In some cases it is necessary to perform a Cantopexy, either to correct the lower skin flaccidity or to avoid an eversion of this skin, which would lead to an artificial outcome.

Scar location

In the upper eyelids, the incision is done in the natural fold of the eye. In the case of the technique used for the lower eyelids, there are two possible approaches: (1) the transconjunctival, which leaves no scar on the skin and works solely to remove excess bags, and (2) the transcutaneous approach, which will remove the skin and bags. The scar is usually very thin and unnoticeable.

Post-Op Cares and Recovery

Blepharoplasty requires basic cares for a fast and efficient recovery. Therefore, we ask the patient to refrain from touching the mini-dressings placed on top of the eyelid, raise their head to sleep and apply cold compresses in the first 24 hours.

The recovery is usually very good and fast, taking from 7 to 10 days for the stitches to be removed. This time frame varies according to each one’s organism and the technique used. The swelling, on the other hand, may take longer to disappear, since it’s a thin and delicate skin, and may vary from one patient to another.

As a rule of thumb, day-to-day activities may be resumed 1 week after the procedure, with the exception of physical exercises that are allowed only after 30 days.

Blepharoplasty outcomes

The results of double eyelid surgery usually start to appear two weeks after the surgery and the edema may take up to 3 months to disappear completely. We usually notice in our patients:

  1. Increased eye opening, making the face look rested
  2. A smoother skin on the upper eyelid, granting a younger look
  3. Absence of puffiness in the lower eyelid, when the excess bags are removed
  4. Firmer, more stretched skin in the lower eyelid, especially when the Cantopexy is performed

During your appointment with Dr. Alexandre, he will assess everything that can be done for you to look younger and less tired, show you before and after photos, and inform the price.

It’s very common to associate Blepharoplasty with a Face Lift, but some patients don’t need such a comprehensive procedure yet.
